The Cozy Factor: How Warmth Influences Us With Hygge
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures get colder, many of us find ourselves craving warmth. Outside of the traditional hot/cold temperature gauge, there are many ways we seek warmth. We are connective individuals and through warmth we often find comfort and connection. In Scandinavian culture, they have a philosophy called, hygge, pronounced “hoo-ga,” which is defined as, “an atmosphere of warmth, wellbeing and coziness. When you feel at peace and able to enjoy simple pleasures and be in the moment.” The Danish are infamously the happiest people on Earth and have found the key to ultimate relaxation.
Here are some factors that warmth influences us and how to welcome more hygge into your life this fall/winter. I promise it will feel like a cure to your winter blues!
The Essence of Hygge
Long, dark winters can be challenging, rather than resisting the cold, the Danish embrace it by creating warm, inviting spaces that foster connection and relaxation. Think soft blankets, flickering candles, and the aroma of baked goods wafting through the air. Hygge is about finding joy in simple pleasures, emphasizing the importance of the environment we cultivate around us. For hygge-inspired cozy space think about what makes you comfortable. Here are a few suggestions:
Lighting: soft, warm lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Turn off those harsh overhead lights and instead opt for a few lamps and candles for that yellow glow. The aroma of a candle can do wonders for your mood as well.
Textures: Bring on all the layers, as any good seasoned Michigander knows. Soft materials like cotton and wool adds tactile comfort to your senses. Putting on that comfy attire after a long work day, I mean is there a better feeling? Make sure you got some cozy socks too. For your space, consider plushy rugs, chunky knit blankets and lots of pillows!
Connect with Nature: Incorporate natural elements, like plants or wooden details into your decor. This can bring instant life and warmth into your space.
The Role of Connection
Hygge also highlights the importance of social connection. Good company enhances positivity, both socially and emotionally. Certain people have warm and friendly personalities and an energy that is undeniably addictive to be around. Gathering with these individuals to share a meal, enjoy a warm beverage over an engaging conversation can increase feelings of warmth, love and belonging. These moments remind us that the cozy factor isn’t just about physical comfort, but also emotional richness. Here are a few ways to incorporate hygge into your social life:
Hosting a Game Night: Invite friends over for board games and snacks. Remember some dim lighting and pleasant music and as the Danes would do- even talk about how hygge the evening is and you’ve got the Scandinavian entertainment down.
Cook Together: Sharing recipes, kitchen space and turn it from a chore into a fun evening in. This is one of my absolute favorite things to do with friends and family for a connective bonding experience.
Get Out in Nature: Embracing winter’s beauty can also be found by enjoying the snow with loved ones going downhill skiing, snowboarding, sledding, ice fishing or a walk in the woods. Remember, there’s no such thing has bad weather- just poor attire. This tip is also proven to kick that seasonal depression. Coming back into the warmth after being in the cold can be cozy- welcome those friends in for a warm drink to wind down.
Fostering a hygge lifestyle can enhance our cozy factor and create a sanctuary that influences our well-being.
